Appraisal Training for Medical or Dental Employees

Overview and Aims

This interactive workshop is designed to equip Medical or Dental appraisers with a thorough understanding of their organisation’s Appraisal Policy and Procedure.

Through guided discussion, practical exercises, and peer learning, participants will explore the full appraisal cycle and develop the skills needed to conduct or participate in an effective, meaningful appraisal conversation.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate familiarity with their organisation’s Appraisal Policy and Procedure.
  • Identify the documentation and evidence required to meet appraisal and revalidation requirements.
  • Recognise the key skills involved in conducting or participating in an appraisal, whether acting as appraiser or appraisee.
  • Approach the appraisal meeting with clarity, confidence, and a focus on shared benefit.
  • Practise and refine appraisal skills through structured peer appraisal exercises. 

Workshop Content

This bespoke workshop is available as a half-day programme, tailored to the organisation’s appraisal procedure.

The workshop will explore some or all of the following areas:

1. Welcome and Introductions

  • Setting expectations for the session
  • Overview of the medical or dental organisation’s appraisal policy and procedure.

2. Preparing for a Medical Appraisal

  • Identifying the evidence required
  • Building and maintaining a personal portfolio. 

3. The Appraisal Interview

  • Responsibilities of the appraiser
  • Responsibilities of the appraisee
  • Identifying and agreeing appropriate actions.

4. Developing the Personal Development Plan (PDP)

  • Translating agreed actions into a clear PDP
  • Setting SMART, achievable objectives.

5. Practice, Feedback and Final Questions

  • Peer appraisal activity identifying appropriate evidence
  • Reflections, feedback, and next steps.
