Unconscious Bias, Equity & Inclusion

Overview

This highly interactive workshop equips managers and staff with a deep, practical understanding of how unconscious bias, equity and inclusion shape everyday interactions with employees, colleagues, applicants, students, patients, customers or service users.

Workshop Content and Actor Options

The workshop is available as a half-day or a full-day programme, led by a trainer alone or by a trainer and two actors.

Depending on the chosen duration, the workshop will explore some or all of the following areas:

Unconscious and Implicit Bias

  • What unconscious and implicit bias are, and the different forms they take
  • How bias can influence decision-making, behaviour and organisational processes
  • Practical strategies to minimise the impact of bias in recruitment, assessment, supervision, service delivery and daily interactions.

The Equality Act 2010

  • The nine protected characteristics
  • Understanding discrimination: direct, indirect, discrimination by perception and association, discrimination arising from disability, reasonable adjustments occupational requirements and positive action
  • Real-world case studies to illustrate how the law applies in practice.

Harassment and Bullying at Work

  • Defining harassment and bullying, including subtle and covert behaviours
  • Preventing, addressing and resolving inappropriate conduct
  • Maintaining a workplace culture free from harassment and bullying 
  • Managing challenging situations professionally and fairly.

Dealing with Workplace Allegations and Incidents

  • Examination of real-life examples of discrimination, harassment, bullying and disrespectful behaviour
  • Exploring effective, fair, informal or formal responses
  • Using case studies or actor-led scenarios to build confidence in handling sensitive or challenging issues.

Organisational Procedures

  • Understanding and applying organisational policies and procedures
  •  How managers and staff can use these frameworks to address concerns and support colleagues.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees will be able to:

  • Clearly define unconscious and implicit bias
  • Recognise how bias can influence interactions, decisions and organisational processes
  • Apply practical steps to reduce the impact of bias in their work
  • Understand what equity, inclusion and respect mean in day-to-day interactions
  • Demonstrate awareness of statutory and legal responsibilities relating to employment, customer or patient care and service delivery
  • Identify discrimination and other barriers to equality and inclusion
  • Define harassment and bullying, and recognise the many forms they can take
  • Confidently manage issues involving staff within their teams
  • Understand their personal and organisational responsibilities
  • Identify practical actions to take forward in their workplace.
